Background

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) partners with New York City public schools to support the positive development of refugee youth. The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program preparing newly arrived refugee youth for success in the NYC public school system.

Scope of Work

The Social Emotional Learning Teacher will create and implement a curriculum for Lower School (Grades K-5) focusing on social emotional learning. The position term is from July 1 to August 16, 2024, with mandatory training and program hours during this period.

Major Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum for a 6-week program.
  • Provide sheltered instructional approaches for English Language Learners/multilingual learners.
  • Submit daily lesson plans, conduct assessments, and maintain student data.
  • Collaborate with staff, support Classroom Culture Lead Teachers, and volunteer Peer Mentors.
  • Complete required reports, progress reports, and final report cards for each student.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, social work, psychology, or related field required; candidate for Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of classroom teaching experience in NYC public schools or accredited school system strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching social-emotional learning to youth highly desirable.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required; proficiency in a relevant second language preferred.

Working Environment

  • The NYSA occurs in a centrally located school in New York City.
  • Applicants must be willing to relocate to NYC for the entirety of the Academy.
