Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in protecting unaccompanied refugee and migrant children. They provide legal services, social services, and advocate for policy changes to ensure every child’s rights are protected.

Position Summary:

KIND’s Fresno office is seeking an Interim Staff Attorney to provide expert legal services to unaccompanied children. Reporting to the Managing Attorney, the Interim Staff Attorney will handle direct representation, legal research, client interviews, and court appearances.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide direct legal representation to KIND clients, including legal research, client interviews, court appearances, and drafting court pleadings.
  • Place cases with pro bono attorneys and build relationships with the pro bono community.
  • Assist in developing pro bono training resources and present trainings to pro bono attorneys and community groups.
  • Contribute to office functioning, participate in meetings and committees, and assist with office events.
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of case data into KIND’s case management systems.
  • Represent KIND at local coalitions, courts, and agencies.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • J.D. and admitted to the local state bar.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Minimum of 1 year of immigration law experience, including humanitarian immigration claims.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with children or vulnerable populations.
  • Strong cultural competence and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience working and communicating in a remote environment.
