There’s a constant feud between cat owners and dog owners about which species of animal makes a better pet. Some animal lovers can not choose between their fur babies, so they house cats and dogs, while others stick to one species. This article will explain ten reasons why cats are better companions than dogs.

Strong Personality

Felines know who they are. Each cat I’ve encountered has a sharp, distinct personality and doesn’t let any meager human challenge its character. My cat, Simon, is a confused, aloof creature who I believe is an alien. Seriously, I don’t think he is from this planet. But, no matter how many people question why he attacks the shadows on the wall or meows at the silent smoke detector, he never changes.

Litter Boxes

Cats teach themselves how to use their littler box. Their primal instincts tell them to hide their waste. Simon needed a little help with this, as he held his bladder for three days as a kitten, but eventually, he learned that the litter box was a friend. Every other cat I’ve encountered knew that the litter box meant business.

Cats are Funny

Have you seen those videos of cats reacting to cucumbers by launching into the air? Cats are hilarious creatures who enjoy nestling inside bags, hiding out on refrigerators, and laying across computer keypads. I used to have a curious six-toed cat who decided he liked black beans one random day. My dad brought home some Cuban food, and Luckie hopped on the table, smelled the black beans, and knocked the bowl off the table all over the white carpet. My dad’s veins popped out of his neck, but Luckie enjoyed his snack and licked his lips.

Cats Bathe Themselves

Cats are sanitary creatures. They bathe themselves to perfection. In contrast, dogs require baths and groomers to keep up with cleanliness. Simon wakes up from his slumbers to lick a specific spot on his belly before returning to his cat nap.

Will Never Lose a Staring Contest

As I write this, my cat Simon is staring out the living room window, unblinking, hoping his long-distance girlfriend will pay him a porch visit. Their love takes place behind a screened-in door, considering Simon turns into a feral beast the instant he steps outside. He shows his love in strange ways. In addition to staring at his girlfriend from afar, he loves to stare at humans for several minutes at a time, unblinking and unbothered.

Free Pest Control

Luckie used to eat roaches and flies. Sadly, roaches are an unavoidable aspect of living in Florida. No matter how many pest control companies you invest in and how many traps you buy, they find their way into the house. I discovered a few months into Luckie’s youth that he enjoyed eating roaches, so if we noticed a bug crawling around, we’d place the floof in the room for a treat. A cat is an excellent investment if you’re scared of the many-legged monsters.

Kitten Kisses

Waking up to salmon breath-tinged sandpaper kisses is the best part of owning a cat. They usually get bored of kisses after a few seconds, so you aren’t stuck wriggling away from a slobbery attack.

Budget-Friendly

Cats don’t require the same upkeep that dogs do. Their adoption fees and vet bills cost far less than that of dogs, and they are less likely to destroy their toys; some don’t even like the standards of traditional cat toys. Simon despises any toy that isn’t a hair tie. I’ve bought him squishy fish, tunnels to hide in, a cat scratch pad, and several variations of strings on sticks, but he sticks to what his heart desires. Hair ties. Not scrunchies, but circular elastic bands he can fetch. Anytime I pick up a hair tie, he directs his attention to the elastic and waits for me to launch it into the air. Once he retrieves the tie, he picks it up in his mouth, like he’s won a prize, and delivers it back to me.

Cats are Quiet

Meowing can be loud and annoying, but usually, meowing is easy to quell. Cats meow when overcome with emotion or in pain. Sometimes they vocalize their hunger. Dogs bark at every little thing, sometimes at nothing. When cats aren’t meowing, they purr, which doesn’t disturb neighbors or others in the house trying to sleep. Unless you’re Simon, he meows when he pleases, but as I mentioned, I think he’s an alien looking for his mothership.

They’re Adorable

Name something cuter than a kitten curled into a ball with her paws draped over her face or whiskers sprouting in all directions while a cat rests next to you. What about a fluffy feline lying on his back, holding a fuzzy mouse with all four paws? You can’t argue that cats boast an undeniable cuteness.

PSA: No animals were harmed in the making of this list. I love both dogs and cats.
