Background

Since 1999, the IRC has partnered with New York City public schools to support the positive development of refugee youth. The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) prepares newly arrived refugee youth for success in the NYC public school system.

Scope of Work

The Physical Education Teacher will create daily physical education/movement lessons for Upper School students (Grades 6-12) as part of the NYSA program. The position term is from July 1 to August 16, 2024.

Major Responsibilities

  • Implement a culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum for a 6-week program.
  • Submit daily lesson plans and utilize sheltered instructional approaches for English Language Learners/multilingual learners.
  • Provide after-care supervision to small cohorts of students as needed.
  • Complete all required reports and evaluations.
  • Participate in one after-school parent/teacher conference evening during the academy.

Job Requirements

  • Experience with teaching group physical education or sports programming required.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in physical education or related field highly desired.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners preferred.
  • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required; second language proficiency in relevant languages desirable.

Working Environment

  • The NYSA takes place in a centrally located school in New York City.
  • All applicants must be willing to relocate to NYC for the entirety of the Academy.
