There’s nothing like the good old days. In fact, kids now have no idea what they missed out on! Today, things like technology and an ever-changing culture present Generation Z with a much different upbringing than most people had.

Recently, Generation Xers and millennials met in an online discussion to reveal everything Gen-Zers are missing out on today.

Being Unreachable

Nothing topped the feeling of being genuinely unreachable. Before the days when everyone had cell phones, leaving your house meant you were effectively off the grid with no way for people to reach you.

For many, this was the ultimate freedom. Now, every Gen-Zer is just a phone call or a text away; we call that the opposite of freedom.

Not Having a Digital Footprint

Generation Z wants nothing more than to broadcast their entire lives across social media. From posting their personal information to confessing private details of their lives, Gen-Zers don’t care about their privacy. Along with others, I long for the days when kids didn’t carry such a hefty digital footprint.

Cooperative Video Games on the Couch

Kids today will never understand: playing cooperative video games next to each other is the epitome of fun! “I had so much fun with friends playing Mario Kart and GoldenEye into the wee hours,” recalls one woman.

“The Nintendo 64 having four controller slots made it our party system of choice. Although, controllers weren’t cheap, and there were near-fist fights over who had to use the third party one.”

Not Dealing With Cell Phones at Concerts

This may surprise younger people, but once upon a time, you could attend concerts without having thousands of people using their cell phones to record the performance. Yes, there was a time when people went to live music events to experience the music itself instead of attempting to record the entire performance for their Instagram accounts. Simpler times, huh?

Parents Who Let You Have Freedom

I miss the days when my parents let me roam around the neighborhood without needing to check in with them constantly. Being a kid just felt safer back in the day.

“Stranger Things was actually a pretty accurate depiction of how much freedom kids had,” expresses one nostalgic man. “Ride your bike wherever and be back when the streetlights come on. Play outside every day and be home for dinner. Not many obligations, maybe practice a few times a week for basketball or whatever.”

Having Your Self-Esteem Impacted by Your Friends, Not Strangers

Generation Z bases their happiness levels on the opinions of strangers through social media. Unsurprisingly, their self-esteem goes up and down on a whim. A few decades ago, however, kids’ self-esteem was impacted by their friends, not strangers! In 2024, opening up their lives to strangers has negatively impacted Generation Z.

Not Being Tethered to Technology

It’s easy to get caught up with the latest technological trends. From cell phones to augmented reality to YouTube streaming, it’s easy for Generation Z to become entirely tethered to tech. Back in the day, innovation moved slower, causing Gen-Xers and millennials to emotionally and mentally evolve at a slower pace that didn’t compete with technological trends.

Real Relationships With Music

Although the music business is as popular as ever, Gen-Z has no idea what they missed out on. The relationship between a person and music has never been so strained. “Spotify and streaming music services have made everything so available, but it seems it has also destroyed that sense of connection,” explains one music fan.

“When you were only buying a few CDs every year, you got to know those albums inside out. Interviews with the artists would reveal their influences that would often lead you down a new, unfamiliar path and was a journey that could take years. Now, it’s instantaneous and a little disposable.”

Mix Tapes

There was nothing more heartwarming, nerve-wracking, and exciting than presenting your crush with a personalized mix tape filled with your favorite songs. In an era when, at best, digital playlists can be exchanged between teenage crushes, genuine music-related romantic gestures seem to be going extinct.

Being Able To Appreciate Technology

Nothing surprises Generation Z. They live in stark contrast to older generations, who routinely were shocked at advancements in technology that came about every few years.

“Absolutely shook me to the core when a phone could not only fit in a pocket but also take pictures,” confesses one woman. “Absurd concept when only a couple years prior I’d be begging my mom to get off the landline so I could try and use the internet.”
