Camden, New Jersey
I have never been to New Jersey, but having read about it, I won’t be visiting Camden anytime soon. “I love Camden,” jokes a one-time visitor. “Great Chinese food if you don’t mind bulletproof glass!” After hearing that kind of review, it would have to be some world-class Chinese food.
South Africa
Without generalizing about an entire country, a South African commenter feels their homeland has become unbearable due to corruption, crippling poverty, and crime. There are certain places you really can’t afford to go to under most, if any, circumstances due to how high the crime rates there are,” warns the local. “The slums in Johannesburg and the Cape flats in Cape Town are a few of those places.”
Birmingham, United Kingdom
England’s second-biggest city was Britain’s industrial center from the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution; later, it hosted a thriving motor industry. However, since the ’90s, car manufacturing has died out, leaving a scarred industrial landscape and Britain’s oddest accent in its wake — think: “Burrmeenghum.” Ask most Englanders for one word to describe Birmingham, and the answer will sit between “depressing” and “gray.”
San Francisco
I visited San Francisco in 2000 and fell in love with the charming, bizarre place. However, the city looks like something between Mad Max and Woodstock these days, which breaks my heart. “I come from a first-world country, and seeing San Francisco was a literal culture shock,” explains a visitor. It wasn’t at all like in the American television shows like Full House that I watched as a kid.”
An Appalachian Service Station
“Rural Appalachian Pennsylvania gas station bathroom,” adds a candid character. “The gas station had a herd of goats.” I don’t know if this description justifies the gas station’s “terrible” label. Goats could be good company if you have a lock on the door.
Zanzibar, Tanzania
My favorite-named island is marketed as a paradise getaway, though stories of acid attacks on young female tourists tarnished this reputation for me. “The island is beautiful, but the rampant poverty and corruption was pretty intense,” claims a recent visitor. “I was really uncomfortable in my role as a ‘wealthy’ tourist.”
Sydney, Nova Scotia
I have friends in Nova Scotia and plan to visit one day. However, I will make the point not to visit Sydney, which a Floridian labels as “simply depressing, dreary, and with a lot of nothing to do.” She continues, “It was a stop on a cruise, and I got the impression they didn’t care for tourists — which I sort of understand, coming from Florida.”
Juarez, Mexico
“I won’t be going back there,” a candid thread leader says. Surprise comes from a Juarez resident who simply asks: “Hello, why the heck would you go to Juarez?” To the original poster’s credit, she credits Juarez as the only Mexican place she “won’t be returning to.” There’s much to love elsewhere in Mexico.
Kings Canyon, Australia
“Kings Canyon, outback Australia,” says a one-time visitor regretfully. “The water tastes awful, and my brother and I injured ourselves in separate accidents while there. Simply no desire to ever go back.” Australia’s outback isn’t for the faint-hearted; killer snakes and spiders, sweltering weather, and plentiful flies follow you wherever you go — it’s a no from me.
Inner Belize
While this Central American paradise has breathtaking blue seas and beach scenery, the interior is a different world for the naive visitor. “I went there as a stop on a cruise, and there were armed guards around gated communities with bars on all the windows,” explains a contributor. “The bus driver also warned us not to get off the bus.”
